Steven Bannon’s voice resonates, even when he was locked up! Almost every American knows his name, but who is Steven K. Bannon?

HISTORY

Steven K. Bannon graduated from Virginia Tech in 1976, and was commissioned as a Naval Officer through the Navy’s Officer Candidate School (OCS). While in the Navy he served as a Surface Warfare Officer aboard the USS Paul F. Foster (DD-964), a Spruance-class destroyer. Served in the Persian Gulf region during the Iran hostage crisis (1979-1980). He achieved the rank of Lieutenant (O-3), working as a special assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon in his later service.

Bannon earned a master’s degree in National Security Studies at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service while still in the Navy, and also earned an MBA from Harvard Business School after leaving the service (1983).

He has often cited his military service as formative to his worldview, particularly regarding national security and foreign policy. His time in the Persian Gulf during the hostage crisis reportedly influenced his later perspectives on US-Middle East relations.

Compared to some other aspects of his life, Bannon’s naval service is relatively straightforward and well-documented.

Most people who know Bannon know about “War Room.” However, Bannon’s career was as varied as it was successful prior to his entry into politics.

Steve Bannon is a significant political figure in American politics, most notably serving as chief strategist and senior counselor to President Donald Trump from January to August 2017. Before entering politics, he had a varied career including:

Naval officer (1976-1983)

Investment banker at Goldman Sachs

Executive producer in Hollywood

Executive chairman of Breitbart News (2012-2016)

CAREER

Key aspects of his political career and influence include:

Campaign involvement: He served as CEO of Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign in its final months.

Media influence: Under his leadership, Breitbart News became a prominent platform for right-wing political views and what Bannon termed “economic nationalism.”

Populist ideology: He’s known for promoting populist, nationalist political views and opposing what he calls the “global elite.”

Since leaving the White House, he has remained active in political media through his “War Room” podcast and continues to be influential in right-wing political circles.

“War Room” is a multimedia political platform, primarily built around a podcast/radio show that launched in October 2019. Here are the key aspects:

  • Broadcasts multiple times daily on various platforms

  • Started as “War Room: Impeachment” during Trump’s first impeachment

  • Later expanded to “War Room: Pandemic” during COVID-19

  • Now simply known as “War Room”

  • Streams on various platforms including Real America’s Voice and Gettr

  • Also available as a podcast

“War Room” is heavily focused on conservative and populist political commentary with regular coverage of election-related issues. He’s laser focused on China policy and criticism of the Chinese Communist Party with in-depth discussion of current political events and controversies. He regularly features guests from conservative politics, media, and activism, and often promotes “precinct strategy” encouraging listeners to get involved in local Republican politics.

“War Room” became an influential platform in right-wing media and serves as a hub for coordinating conservative grassroots activism. Bannon’s claim is that he has millions of listeners and viewers makes his show a valuable voice for conservative causes. As such, the show is often used as a platform for launching or promoting conservative political campaigns and causes and has become a required stop for many Republican candidates seeking office.

CONTROVERSY

All this fame and reach is not absent controversy, though.

The show was removed from several platforms including YouTube and Twitter for promoting various controversial political theories. “War Room” has emerged as a significant force in conservative media, though like many political media outlets, its exact reach and influence can be difficult to independently verify, and some on the Left claim he overstates the show’s popularity and reach.

In 2021, he was charged with contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a subpoena from the January 6th Committee, a decision by the Committee that seemed political in nature. In 2022, he was convicted of contempt of Congress, a conviction that, along with the conviction of Peter Navarro, was a first and second of its kind.

The FINANCIAL TIMES reported “In 2024, Steven K. Bannon, former chief strategist to President Donald Trump, served a four-month federal prison sentence for contempt of Congress. He was convicted in July 2022 for refusing to comply with a subpoena from the House committee investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. Bannon reported to the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, on July 1, 2024, to begin his sentence. ….”

“Upon his release on October 29, 2024, Bannon immediately resumed his media presence, emphasizing his commitment to the MAGA movement and criticizing the Biden administration.”

Others, typically Democrats, have been held in contempt of Congress with no court cases or incarceration involved. In 2012, then-Attorney General Eric Holder, who served under President Barack Obama, was held in contempt of Congress for refusing to produce documents subpoenaed by Congress, and in 2014, Lois Lerner, a former IRS official accused of targeting conservative groups, was held in contempt for refusing to testify before Congress. However, the Justice Department did not prosecute her.

Steven K. Bannon remains a polarizing force in American politics, a man whose influence is undeniable but whose legacy is hotly contested. Whether viewed as a visionary strategist or a lightning rod for controversy, Bannon’s name is etched into the fabric of this era—bold, brash, and unrelenting. His story isn’t just a chapter; it’s a mirror reflecting the divisions and dynamics of our time.

We can’t ask often enough that you contribute to a charity or organization that is taking care of the hurricane victims. The government is still slow-walking their disaster response and people still need help. We recommend Samaritan’s Purse or Mercury One as already on the ground and doing excellent work. Thank you.
