President Trump has signed an executive order affecting election integrity. Trump, a proponent of secure, hand-marked, paper ballots, is widely seen as starting a process to end the use of voting machines by signing this order.
The text of the executive order (EO) is not available. However, Trump was told the EO will cut funding to states that do not take steps to ensure their elections are secure. The EO directs the Department of Justice to aggressively prosecute election law violations. Finally, the EO will require more robust checks on a voter’s citizenship.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that the EO also calls for changing the federal voting guidelines to end voter selections on a ballot to be encoded in a bar code or QR code.
While executive orders do not have the power of an act of Congress, it does dictate the policy of the President and directs executive agencies on how to act to implement those policies. Trump said that there is more coming on election integrity in the future, but he did not elaborate further.
