How the Senate lost the war

Matt Gaetz gets nominated and the first thing Senators (anonymous of course, chicken anyone?) “leak” is he can’t get confirmed. Republicans are just the worst when it comes to sticking up for what’s right. The Department of Justice (DOJ) bandied about “mentions” of affairs with minors but never announced charges, Democrats filed ethics complaints against him but they came to naught, and he led the movement that got rid of Kevin McCarthy, who may have a place in Trump’s administration, but was a horrible Majority Leader in the House.
Yup, Gaetz is young and brash, that’s one side of him. His compatriots in the House also say he’s one of the smartest Representatives they know. His district in Florida loves him. Yet the anonymous Republican Senator (it really rankles when people complain and not attach their names to it) says “he will not be confirmed.”
What does he know that we don’t? Probably nothing. He’s being prompted by one of his political masters to make the statement as part of a psych-op to set the stage for a miserable confirmation session where any and all garbage available is thrown against the wall hoping something sticks.
And this is a Republican. We could understand a Democrat saying something like that, and we assume the Democrats will do business as usual and try to block Republican appointments. That’s what they do (and what we do too, to be honest), but a Republican?
We’re here in ruby red Arkansas, and Trump won this state bigly. We believe it would be a political mistake for either of our Senators to come out against Gaetz. And mistake is a kind way of putting it.
Donald Trump has a mandate to do the things he promised in his campaign, and Republicans who were helped by his coattails can’t, or shouldn’t, rebel before he has a chance to get started. You all ran on Trump, you relied on Trump, and now you have to support Trump!
The first crack in the wall is this lily-livered announcement by an unknown Republican. What a disgrace this Senator is. Elected to the US Senate to do the business of the People, and less than a month after the election it’s back to being too scared to own the statement. If he wants to be a Democrat then change parties.
Right now we’re at an inflection point. The Senate can go along with Trump’s picks, which they should, or it’s the Deep State blocking everything because their masters demand it. We always hear “a president should get to pick the people who will help him get the job done.” Why not now, why not Trump?
We should remember who defects to the dark side, especially when they’re up for reelection. Till then, write, call, email, text your Senator and tell them to support Trump and confirm Gaetz. They need to remember who they actually work for, and it’s not the donors.
Given the government’s refusal to bring effective help the victims of the hurricanes, we will continue to ask that you contribute to a charity or organization that is taking care of the victims. There are still so many that need help and the government is still slow-walking their response.
We recommend Samaritan’s Purse or Mercury One as already on the ground and doing excellent work. Thank you.
Of course Gaetz decided the game wasn’t worth the trouble and withdrew. I left this article up as it was accurate when published. Now we have Pam Bondi nominated for Attorney General, and the same empty talking heads are worried about her. When are these folks going to have the courage to back their president? We elected him, don’t you think we should support his choices?
