NEWS. Peter Navarro will return to the White House for Trump’s second term. Trump selected Navarro as his “Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing.” Navarro is a Trump loyalist who served four months in federal prison for defying a congressional subpoena from the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol Riot.
Navarro has been out of prison for roughly five months. He, along with Steve Bannon and others, are expected to be pardoned very early in Trump’s new administration.
Navarro has been supportive of Trump’s protectionist economic policies. In a Truth Social post, Trump said that Navarro was “a man who was treated horribly by the Deep State, or whatever else you would like to call it.” He praised Navarro for his work in his first administration for “enforcing my two sacred rules, Buy American, Hire American.”
Trump additionally stated that Navarro, a Harvard trained economist, is expected to “help successfully advance and communicate the Trump Manufacturing, Tariff, and Trade Agendas.”
ANALYSIS. Navarro is a sharp guy and widely considered to be a China hawk. I think Trump would have tapped Navarro is some form even if he did not go to prison over the J6 committee’s political witch hunt.
Navarro’s selection indicates that Trump is serious about bringing protectionist economic policies back to America. Additionally, his statement about the deep state (which I believe to be accurate) is further evidence that Trump intends to correct a politicized Justice Department through pardons, cleaning house, and Kash Patel.
