This article is a partial update to one I wrote in September. You can find it here.
I don’t care if Joe Biden pardoned Mark Milley. As president that was his privilege and authority. It is my belief that a pardon is not required if there is no crime, so as a group, those whom Biden pardoned were probably pardoned for a reason.
I do care about what Mark Milley actually did. Mark Milley is absolutely guilty of several serious crimes, however he’s pardoned, so his reputation will have to carry the guilt his craven character won’t.
Several reports indicate that Milley took actions to prevent potential misuse of presidential authority during the final months of Trump’s presidency.
According to Reuters, September 15, 2021:
WASHINGTON, Sept 14 (Reuters) – The top U.S. general secretly called his Chinese counterpart twice over concerns then-President Donald Trump could spark a war with China as his potential election loss loomed and in its aftermath, the Washington Post reported on Tuesday.
U.S. General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, called General Li Zuocheng of the People’s Liberation Army on Oct. 30, 2020 – four days before the election – and again on Jan. 8, two days after Trump supporters led a deadly riot at the US Capitol, the newspaper reported.
We note that this report is not from a friend of Donald Trump. Characterizing the January 6 protest as a “deadly riot” is sort of a giveaway, so we’ll tend to believe anything this report says to indict Milley for making secret calls to Chinese Generals to advise them the US was not planning any military action against them.
I don’t see anywhere in this report that Donald Trump, the duly elected President at the time, and Milley’s Commander-in-Chief, nor the Secretary of Defense, his direct superior, ever authorized any calls to a hostile military.
According to the book Peril by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, in October 2020 and January 2021, “Milley made calls to his Chinese counterpart, General Li Zuocheng, to assure him that the U.S. was not planning any military action against China. These calls were reportedly intended to prevent misunderstandings that could lead to conflict.”
Again here, Bob Woodward is not a friend of Donald Trump, so we will consider his statement true.
Additionally, after the January 6 Capitol attack, Milley reportedly held a meeting with senior military officials to review procedures for military actions, including the use of nuclear weapons, emphasizing that any such orders should involve his participation. This was reportedly done to ensure that military decisions remained consistent with legal and constitutional principles.
These actions have been interpreted by some as efforts to safeguard against potential misuse of military power during a tumultuous period. That sounds wonderful, and it would be if Milley had any direct operational command authority, which the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs does not have.
Again, he injected himself into a conversation where he had no place, not need to be, and certainly no business. The head of the Joint Chiefs is an advisor, and not part of any command decision.
Then you have the January 6 protests. President Trump had advised Milley days in advance to use whatever resources he needed.
According to the Committee on House Administration, Sept 5, 2024:
On January 6, 2021, the deployment of the National Guard to the U.S. Capitol was delayed due to concerns about the “optics” of such a deployment. Newly obtained transcripts from the Department of Defense Inspector General reveal that senior Pentagon officials, including Acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller, were hesitant to deploy the D.C. National Guard promptly because they were worried about how it would appear publicly.
Further, the report states
In the days leading up to January 6, President Trump met with senior Pentagon leaders, urging them to ensure sufficient National Guard or active-duty soldiers were available to make the event safe. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, recalled that President Trump directed them to “do whatever you have to do, just make sure it’s safe.”
According to the Military Times, August 11, 2022,
Despite these directives, the National Guard did not arrive at the Capitol until approximately 5:40 p.m., after much of the violence had subsided. This delay has been attributed to the Pentagon’s concerns over the visual impact of deploying troops at the Capitol.
Also, it seems the phones of top pentagon officials like the ex-Chair of the JCS and the ex-Acting SecDef were wiped when they left the administration, so evidence that could have proved them innocent or guilty is missing.
While President Trump had urged Pentagon leaders to ensure safety by deploying the National Guard if necessary, the actual deployment was delayed due to senior Defense Department officials’ apprehensions about the public perception of such an action. This sounds like disobeying a lawful order.
So, in summary, it seems to us that Mark Milley (we will never call this traitor general again) committed treason by communicating our strategic plans to our enemies, and he disobeyed a lawful order when President Trump directed him to insure the Capitol was protected.
We are led to believe Milley played a part in planning the Afghanistan abandonment, and that it was done that way at Joe Biden’s insistence. So he obeys one President and not the other. This man is as much a patriot as I am a parrot. And 13 service men and women died as a result of his faulty leadership.
It seems in this case, Joe Biden actually pardoned a criminal. I wonder how many others he pardoned are as provably guilty as Mark Milley.
Maybe we’ll find out…
The people in Western North Carolina still need help, and it’s cold and wet in the mountains. We continue to ask that you do whatever you can to assist them.
We continue to recommend Samaritan’s Purse or Mercury One as already on the ground and doing excellent work. Thank you.
