In the January 29, 2025 issue of Camden News is an article by Rex Nelson that, after a probably fictitious opening paragraph, goes on to denigrate the MAGA movement and attempt, in a clumsy way, to show that MAGA is the current version of the John Birch Society. What a load of crap!
He starts off with extensive quotes from Indigo Olivier, who writes for “The New Republic,” and is responsible for articles titled “Kamala, Denounce Netanyahu. Do It Now,” and “Shawn Fain is the President We Deserve. Yes, Really.” So she advocates for denouncing the leader of our foremost ally in the Middle East, and recommends a union boss as President. I don’t know that Indigo Olivier should be believed when she comments on any right-leaning political group, given her leftist credentials.
Nelson then switches from the leftist New Republic author to quotes from Matthew Dallek, a professor of political management at George Washington University’s College of Professional Studies. He’s written books about the John Birch Society, Roosevelt and the Origins of Homeland Security, and Ronald Reagan. He was a speechwriter for Democrat Richard Gephardt. Looks like Rex is two-for-two picking references to write his article smearing MAGA and the Arkansas 1st Movement.
One of the quotes Nelson includes is this:
”I see it in many of the tenets that Trump and many of his MAGA supporters hold and promote,” Dallek said. “A hostility to international organizations and, really, the entire post-World War II international order. America First is a repudiation of an interventionist United States with a strong diplomatic and military presence and military alliances overseas.”
Dallek then draws parallels between MAGA and the John Birch Society in areas like immigration, building the wall, flouride, and birtherism.
Nelson also says “As the current legislative session grinds through its early days, it strikes me that what I call the New Birchers have taken over a number of county Republican committees. These aren’t the Arkansas Republicans I knew when I was helping run GOP campaigns in this state during the 1980s and 1990s.”
He continues to look down his “I’m so special” nose at MAGA by reporting “The good news is that the New Birchers aren’t the state’s business and civic leaders. For the most part, they’re people you’ve never heard of. But they’ve had remarkable success in taking over county Republican organizations. The fringe groups that now pose as county GOP committees shouldn’t be confused with the Rotary Club.” What an arrogant ass this man is! He conflates MAGA with the John Birch Society and then, just in conversation, asserts that we’re not part of the cool kids.
And of course, while he’s taking pot shots at MAGA and Arkansas 1st, he can’t resist retelling the Cavin story in the worst possible light and finishes his BS with “So it goes for the New Birchers.” It would be easy to ask this dinosaur who he’s talked to about this whole issue; however, it becomes apparent in the next piece of crap pie he serves when he then talks about dissolving Saline County and removing Jennifer Lancaster with all the lurid detail he can muster without telling the truth. He does tell the truth when he reports the vote totals at the Republican Convention (Lancaster 360, Wood 256).
The rest of his article attempts to build the case that those who don’t agree with the Republican Party of Arkansas’ (RPA) dictatorial methods of operation are subversives. Nelson does ask the question how Governor Sanders will treat MAGA (he calls us the New Birchers, but I call him a dinosaur, so we’re even), being that she sort of owes her political success to Trump and MAGA. Have no fear, the Governor continues to use strong-arm tactics, which is consistent with RPA’s modus operandi.
You should read the article. It’s a tour-de-force into what old guard Republicans believe, and how they disregard the people who actually wave signs and contribute sweat and money to get them elected to insure donors and those who are paid to be Republicans remain happy.
Rex, you are entitled to your beliefs, but you missed the boat. If you actually did more than copy from a couple of leftists and did some research you’d find the people you’ve worked so hard to denigrate are the successors to the TEA Party.
You remember us don’t you? The group that took the Republican Party out of obscurity and gave it a political base that won elections? And then you and the rest of the old guard ignored everything we asked for, expecting us to bask in your glow and do your bidding? Well we didn’t. We stayed the course.
And we’re still here, only now we’re MAGA and Arkansas 1st, and you and the RPA elites don’t know what to do with us. Again.
