The Arkansas State Police and a number of prosecuting attorneys met at the ASP training facility at Camp Robinson for a big presser yesterday. The topic of discussion was related to prosecuting those who flee from law enforcement. And this brings up some interesting points.
First off, and candidly, I am a huge fan of watching the ASP pursuits on YouTube. You have the legend, Trooper Byrd, who can TVI a fleeing Honda in pretty substantial traffic on I-630. Check it out here. You even have LRPD veteran and ASP rookie Trooper David Whipple chasing down drunks during the midday. Watch it for yourself.
The phenomenon of fleeing is not relegated to central Arkansas. In west Arkansas, Trooper James Ray ended a pursuit of a car fleeing law enforcement driving the wrong way on the interstate. He did so by way of sacrificing himself and his vehicle by taking the fleeing car out with a head on collision. Watch it below. This is true heroism.
An idiot driving fleeing law enforcement at high speeds is akin to driving a flying missile down the highway. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be hit by a fleeing driver at 130 mph. So thank you, Arkansas State Police, for taking these jackholes out. I only ask that you do it faster.
I mention this not just as a message about public awareness of idiot drivers and the heroes in blue. I sent an email to Col. Mike Hagar, the director of the ASP, offering to write legislation that would toughen the penalties on drivers who flee. For example, if you flee at 100 mph, putting everyone in danger, your driver’s license is only suspended. However, if you leave the scene of an accident causing death or serious injury, your license is revoked.
Why is it that your license is not revoked if you flee law enforcement and put everyone else at risk over something stupid? Now, having a free lawyer write free legislation to keep Arkansans safe seems like a no-brainer. But what did this trusty scribe hear from the Arkansas State Police.
Not jack-not even an acknowledgement that the offer was received. But now they are going to prosecute fleeing drivers harder with weak laws.
Welcome to progress.
