On November 28th the Conway High School Football team hosted Bentonville High School in a State semi-final match up.

During that game Conway Athletic Director Greg Hughes was on the Conway sideline. With 10 seconds left in the game, video shows Hughes grabbing a Conway player on the sideline from behind jerking him backwards, spinning him around, then shoving him.

Now I’m pretty sure there’s not just a rule against that but there’s a law as well….In fact I’m certain of it.

Now the District was made aware of the incident that very night yet according to District officials Hughes has not been placed on Administrative Leave while his actions are being investigated.

Administrative Leave is the proper protocol for the Interim Superintendent Jason Black to take….So why hasn’t he ?

Former Conway teacher Barbara Tucker was immediately placed on Administrative Leave by Black when the District learned of her grabbing a student. She was just recently terminated by the Board for doing so.

But then again Tucker was just a teacher and not a member of the District Administrative Country Club.

With this article out, don’t be surprised if tomorrow Black does what he should have done the day after the incident by putting Hughes on Administrative Leave.

From all accounts the student’s father, Nathaniel Rozzelle, has taken reasonable steps in the matter beginning the very night of the incident.

Friday, he sent Jason Black, the Administration and the School Board members an email calling for the termination of Hughes.

The email included quotes from Hughes in an email he sent Rozzelle on that same day admitting he made inappropriate contact with his son. The email also details the context of the incident.

As you can see Rozzelle’s email is not an angry parent’s rant. It was very well thought out and very well written.

The points he makes on the District’s past actions involving inappropriate contact with a student are spot on.

Now there will be those who condone Hughes’ actions and those who don’t.

What cannot be disputed is that Hughes violated the following –

District Policy 8.40 – Personnel Ethics

District Policy 8.48 – Personnel Code of Conduct

State Educator Ethics Standard 1.

Then there is Criminal Statute AR Code 5-13-207 – Assault in the third degree.

(a) A person commits assault in the third degree if he or she purposely creates apprehension of imminent physical injury in another person.

(b) Assault in the third degree is a Class C misdemeanor.

So, what now ?

Well for my part, I am going to conduct a thorough investigation into the handling of the incident.

Once completed I will present that investigation to you, the public.

Now will Jason Black be honest and transparent when responding to my requests for records on the matter ?

Based on his past pattern that answer is not no but Hell no.

No matter because I will get the Truth and I will get the Facts and as bad as he wants to prevent that….There’s not a Damn thing he can do to stop me.

Rules are rules and they should be followed. When was the last time a student was charged with assault for starting a fight on campus during school hours. I know they have been, but mostly not. Circumstances do alter cases. I remember taking a painful discharge from my coach for not following instructions. I got back in the game and followed instructions.

I also remember saying something off hand to a teacher that was not flattering. Nothing nasty but I should not have said it. I was marched into the principals office where that teacher gave me about four or five hard licks with a paddle. To this day, he is my favorite teacher. And yes, circumstances change over the decades. The big issue in Conway is the degradation of the school system as a learning institution. Bad grades for the school system should have citizens moving their children to other schools and removing school board members. Conway “city” and Conway “schools” have taken a dive that needs correction.
