Political activism in Arkansas crosses all the lines you can imagine: Republican, grassroots, Democratic, libertarian, and so forth. But, at its basic level political activism is all the same: it’s all about getting the attention of the public and stakeholders in order to bring about a change you desire.
We’re always open to hints that help people become more active and be more effective when they communicate with their lawmakers, so the Franklin County Coalition Guide by the progressive advocacy group For Arkansas People caught our attention.
It’s aimed at Franklin County residents who oppose Governor Sarah Sanders’ plan to build a state prison on acreage the State of Arkansas has already purchased in their area without informing local elected officials or the voters, but the generic tips are useful in any situation where you want to get the attention of the public and stakeholders to bring about a change.
Activism Works
The Guide outlines 8 steps to help you — or anyone — get results when you’re lobbying:
1. Know the issue
2. Share your story
3. Contact lawmakers
4. Organize events
5. Spread the word
6. Engage the media
7. Learn grassroots lobbying
8. Stay positive and persistent
Arkansas 1st members will be involved in legislation coming before the upcoming General Session of the Arkansas Legislature that begins January 13. Maybe you’re already comfortable with persuading lawmakers and stakeholders to take up your cause, but if you’re not, this Coalition Guide can help sharpen your activism skills so you can join us as we look to support “Arkansas First” at the State Capitol.

God’s child, Arkansas conservatarian
