Blunt Force Trauma – Refers to injury of the body by forceful impact, falls, or physical attack with a dull object.
Stay with me a minute.
On June 3rd of this year NLR Animal Control took custody of 9 cross bred bull dogs from a breeder who was cited for banned breeds and vaccination ordinance violations. One of those nine was a pup named Hood Hero.
All nine were then housed at the NLR Animal Shelter together but in individual kennels.
According to records on July 16th all nine became very ill with symptoms of heavy sneezing and red inflamed eyes with some discharging blood from the mouth and eyes. At around 9:30am they were rushed to Kiehl Avenue Animal Clinic with Hood Hero in particular distress.

Eight of them were treated with the Doctor noting the possible cause of condition being Kennel Cough. However, research shows these same symptoms can be caused by bleach fume inhalation. Of course, the Doctor would have no idea about this exposure.
Staff members and shelter volunteers reported heavy use of bleach in the kennels to the point of staff having to leave the areas where applied. Simple logic dictates if a human can breath it in then so can animals….Ever heard of the canary in the coal mine ?
I say eight of them were treated because on arrival at the clinic Hood Hero began gasping for air with his tongue turning purple. He was rushed to the back of the clinic where lifesaving measures, including chest compressions, were taken but sadly the attempts were unable to save our little Hood Hero.

I say little because Hood Hero was still a pup having just turned one year old weighing 30lbs…..He was not a large dog and from Staff member accounts was a friendly pup.
A Necropsy, (Autopsy for animals), was performed on July17th by the Arkansas Department of Agriculture at the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory….This is where the death of Hood Hero turns very ugly.
The Necropsy showed that Hood Hero didn’t die from Kennel Cough or bleach fume inhalation….He died due to hemorrhage from a ruptured Liver….So how did he have a ruptured Liver ?
The Necropsy states that Blunt Force Trauma, (like a hard kick to the abdomen), is a common cause. It goes on to state that however spontaneous non-traumatic liver rupture has been described in dogs but is the 2nd, unintentionally misleading ?

Research shows that non-traumatic liver rupture in dogs can be caused by Neoplasia which is the uncontrolled growth of cells generating masses, (tumors). The Spleen is the most common organ to develop Neoplasia and generally with most dogs being diagnosed with it after ten years of age.
Based on the research and the fact that the Necropsy showed no masses, I think we can pretty much rule out non-traumatic rupture which leaves us with Blunt Force Trauma.
Now it’s important to point out that the Liver in dogs is in a very vulnerable position. It is located in the belly just outside the protection of the rib cage leaving it easily exposed to taking a blow or blows.
According to NLR Animal Control, investigations into animal abuse are conducted by the department if it is a misdemeanor or by the NLRPD if it rises to a felony.
So did the investigation reveal the method of the blunt force trauma ?….Who applied it ?….Where it took place ?….When it took place ?
The answer is no to all because according to the City, an investigation was never done….What the Hell !….Are you kidding me ?
Now you can’t put that on the NLRPD…. Can’t investigate a crime that has not been reported and according to the City there was no report made to them….Animal Control on the other hand ???
The Director of the NLR Animal Control is Adam Tindall. I can understand him not wanting his own department to investigate the death….After all Hood Hero was in his custody so that’s a conflict.
What there is Zero excuse for is Tindall not making a report to NLRPD and asking them to conduct a criminal investigation into Hood Hero’s death….Zero.
There is plenty of evidence here to meet AR Code 5-62-104 Offense of Aggravated Cruelty to a Dog, Cat, or Equine, which is a Class D Felony.

So why didn’t Tindall report this to the NLRPD ?….The obvious comes to mind right ?
Tomorrow I am going to email him asking him that very question…,.But I’m not stopping there.
I am going to email Mayor Terry Hartwick my findings on the death which I’m betting he knows nothing about. Hartwick has always been responsive to matters brought to his attention and I am sure he will want answers as well as all of us.
Since Tindall did not report the death to NLRPD, I will.
Tomorrow I will file an Incident Report with them on the death of Hood Hero and I have no doubt they will conduct a full investigation into the matter. Once the investigation is closed, I will FOI the file and provide it to the Public.
Stay tuned as in the coming days I will provide an update on Hood Heros’s death along with bringing to light other disturbing issues at the NLR Animal Shelter.
Will there be accountability ?….Will there be charges filed ?….We are about to find out.
