City Council Approves Giving Themselves Year End Bonus.

In a time when blue-collar residents of Beebe are struggling to buy Christmas presents for their families, the Beebe City Council mandated that they fund a Christmas gift for each Council member and all other City elected office holders.
At the end of the November 19th City Council meeting, Ward 2 Councilman Tracy Lightfoot made the motion stating –
“I make a motion that all elected officials, including the Mayor, Clerk and Treasurer, City Council members receive an end of the year bonus of $1,000.00.”

The motion was seconded and passed by unanimous vote followed by a quick adjournment.
Now I was watching the meeting on YouTube researching another issue and was just about to log off when I heard Lightfoot make the motion.
I rewound and listened again to make sure I heard right and sure enough I did.
My immediate thought went to those young blue-collar working parents on a tight budget trying to figure out how they are going to buy their kids Christmas presents with a lot of them knowing they just can’t afford to get the kids what they asked Santa for.
I gotta tell ya it really flared my butt that the Beebe City Council would be so arrogant to mandate these folks fund a Christmas present to themselves.
The City Council members are –
Ward 1 – Lee McLane and Nathan Lindsey
Ward 2 – Jean Stark and Tracy Lightfoot
Ward 3 – Matthew Dugger and Jacob McCormick
I really wanted to know their reasoning for this, so I emailed all of them asking….Of course I got no response.

I called Councilman Lightfoot and identified myself and inquired about his reasoning for making the motion. He said not right now I’m at work and to please not call him there. I said sure and asked if there was another way to call him and he then immediately hung up….Some much for Transparency, right ?
Now stop and wonder to yourself just how many of the blue-collar working folks who live in Beebe even got a year-end Bonus ?….And if they did you can bet it wasn’t $1,000.00….Yet these very folks were mandated by law to give the Council members one.
So now I’m wondering if this has been a pattern with the Beebe City Council and if any other City Councils also gave themselves a year-end bonus ?
So over the coming weeks, I’m gonna do that thing I do and find out.
In the meantime, you folks in Beebe let me know how you feel about your City Council mandating you give them a Christmas gift.
