There has been no announcement from the District in regard to the termination. However, on December 5th the position of Head Football Coach was posted on its Human Resources page under Job Listings.

After doing some inquiries I was informed that Fort Smith attorney Joey McCutchen is representing Coach Curry in the matter.

McCutchen is widely known across the State for taking on issues of Government wrongdoing and abuse. In full disclosure McCutchen has represented me in the past in a lawsuit against the Cabot School Board.

He and his partner Stephen Napurano are currently representing me in lawsuits against the Arkansas State Police and the Mayor of Fort Smith, both of which we have reported on here at Arkansas 1st News.

I contacted McCutchen to see if he could fill me in on what had happened.

He informed me that on November 22nd Coach Curry was called to a meeting with Assistant Superintendent Chris Davis and Athletic Director Michael Beaumont where he was told that his contract would not be renewed for the 2025-2026 school year. (Public Schools new fiscal year begins on July 1st).

I asked what reason was given to his client and he said “They didn’t give him one.”

McCutchen went on to say that Curry was caught completely off guard and shocked by being informed of the non-renewal. He said Curry asked Davis and Beaumont for the reason but never got an answer.

He said Curry left the meeting under the impression he would be meeting again with the two to discuss the matter more.

McCutchen said “To make matters worse, instead of that meeting taking place, Coach was called in by the Northside Principal, (Chris Carter), on December 4th and told he was being relieved of his coaching duties immediately and was then reassigned.”….The very next day the job was posted.

I asked McCutchen if Coach Curry has been provided anything in writing on his non-renewal and reassignment to which he said “Nothing…not a thing.”

I asked if he and his client have plans to fight the termination? He said – “Right now we are just trying to schedule a meeting with the Administration to find out why Coach is being let go and get something in writing from the District which they have yet provide.”

McCutchen said Curry’s personnel file is spotless with no discipline issues at all, so is this about wins and losses ?

Curry had been the Northside Head Coach for three seasons and honestly his record to date is not impressive going 4 – 7, 2 – 9 and 2 – 9. But then again this was only his 3rd season, and it takes time to build your program.

If it is about wins and losses, then that will present a Double Standard issue.

The other High School in the District is Fort Smith Southside whose Head Football Coach is Kim Dameron. His record in five seasons as Head Coach is 2 – 9, 2 – 9, 4 – 7, 7 – 5 and 4 – 6.

Nothing against Coach Dameron at all but one winning season out of five is nothing to hang your hat on. You would think that if it’s about wins and losses, then Dameron would be the one being non-renewed or at least both he and Curry and not Curry alone.

Again, according to McCutchen, Curry’s personnel file is spotless so if it’s not about wins and losses what is it ?….Political ?….Personal ?….Or Worse ?

You all know I have a pretty good nose and so far, nothing about this smells good at all….So I’m gonna do that thing I do.

I’m going to investigate the matter and bring you the facts whatever they are….Don’t be shocked if this issue is really ugly.
