Hoxie Mayor Dennis Coggins Arrested And Charged With Felony Theft Of Property

Hoxie, a town of 2,600, is located in Northeast Lawrence County.
Its Mayor, Coggins, has a long controversial history including allegations of trying to run over a man with his truck, soliciting sex in lieu of rent payment from a tenant and being found guilty of multiple counts of violating the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act….Those are just a few in that history.
On April 11th of this month, Coggins added to his resume’ when he was arrested and charged with AR Code 5-36-103 Theft of Property, a Class D Felony.
The Arrest Affidavit stated that in March of 2024, the City of Hoxie purchased $3,221.96 worth of laminate flooring. Fifteen of the forty-five boxes purchased were used to re-floor the Mayor’s office. The remaining thirty boxes were then stored in a closet at City Hall.
Sometime later the Hoxie Police Department decided to use the remaining flooring for its offices which are at City Hall as well, however the boxes could not be located.
After an investigation, a search warrant was served at a home owned by Coggins and occupied by a tenant. Police found the flooring had been installed at the home with one remaining unopened box in a closet.
An arrest warrant was then issued for Coggins who was booked into the Lawrence County Jail on April 11th and released on $1,500.00 Bail.
If convicted Coggins faces up to six years in prison and up to a $10,000.00 fine. Plea and Arraignment on the charges are set for April 28th in Lawrence County Circuit Court.
When the arrest took place, media outlets in the Northeast part of the State reported on it with little or no coverage from other State news organizations.
While I knew about the arrest when it happened, I was unable to report on it due to covering the Legislative Session. This story deserves Statewide coverage, so I wanted to make sure and bring it to everyone.
While Hoxie is a small town it has more than its fair share of drama which all seems to center around Mayor Coggins.
Has his Teflon layer finally worn out ?….We are about to find out.
